3. The Compostability Myth The "winner" in this comparison is often determined by where the cup goes. A paper cup is rarely recycled because of its liner, but it is relatively inert in a landfill. A compostable cup only delivers a climate benefit if it reaches an industrial composting facility. These facilities use high heat to break down the PLA. If the cup is tossed in a standard bin, it cannot biodegrade properly. In anaerobic (oxygen-poor) landfill conditions, compostable materials can ferment and release methane, making the "greener" choice worse for the climate in practice.
